My experience as a WordPress contributor – Final report

Hello everyone!

My name is Linda Rossi, and I am a Linguistics and Translation student at the University of Pisa. As part of my internship program, I joined the WP Credits course and had the opportunity to contribute to WordPress for the first time.

This report summarizes my experience, the contributions I made, the challenges I faced, and the skills I developed throughout this journey.

Teams and Projects I Contributed To

During my internship, I contributed to the WordPress Polyglots Team. My work focused mainly on translating WordPress, themes, and plugins from English into Italian.

Before starting my contributions, I completed several training courses that introduced me to the WordPress ecosystem. These courses helped me understand both the theoretical and practical aspects of the platform, including how to create and manage a website. Following the tutorials, I also created my personal blog, where I documented my experience throughout the internship.

Learning Resources

The training materials provided by the WP Credits program were essential in helping me understand how WordPress works and how contributors collaborate within the community.

A special thanks goes to my mentor, Ivana Cirkovic, who supported me throughout the entire experience. She was always available to answer my questions and guide me whenever I needed help.

Challenges and Solutions

At the beginning of the internship, one of the biggest challenges was learning how to use WordPress and Slack, as both platforms were completely new to me. However, by practicing regularly, following the available resources, and asking questions when needed, I gradually became more confident in using them.

Another challenge was balancing the internship with my university studies and other commitments. Since I could organize my own schedule, I learned how to manage my time effectively in order to meet deadlines and complete my tasks.

My Contributions

My main contributions were related to translation and localization activities within the Polyglots Team. I worked on translations for WordPress, themes, and plugins, gaining practical experience in a field closely connected to my studies.

Key Learnings from the WP Credits Course

This experience taught me how important accuracy and attention to detail are when translating content, especially when the goal is to provide a clear and reliable experience for users.

New Skills Gained

Working with an international community helped me strengthen my communication skills in English, while managing my internship alongside my studies improved my organizational and time-management abilities.

Personal Reflections and Next Steps

The part I appreciated the most was interacting with the people in the WordPress community. Everyone I met was kind, supportive, and willing to help.

At the moment, I do not plan to continue contributing to WordPress, as I am focusing on my studies and future career goals. However, I truly enjoyed this experience, and I would be happy to contribute again in the future if the opportunity arises.
